Part #4

Here it is! What you've all been waiting for... Part #4!

Part #4

Automatically, Puppy dove behind Paw, her eyes shut tight. She heard Paw growl and bark his loudest.

Fernickle jumped back. “What do you think you are, you filthy thing?” Paw barked again. Puppy understood his every word. But all Fernickle heard were barks and growls. But not whines.

“Move aside,” Fernickle demanded Paw. She reached out her pruny foot, ready to push Paw away, but Paw didn’t budge. Instead, he launched his muzzle toward Fernickle’s foot, and bit it. Hard. Fernickle screamed in shock. “I should have gotten rid of you years ago! AAARGH! What have you done to my foot?”

Fernickle limped back into the kitchen, scowling. “I will get you, you gruesome creature!”

“Hurry. Follow me,” Paw whispered. Just then, a thought hit Puppy.

“Um… Paw? What are we going to do? How are we going to stop her from sending you back to the shelter?” She noticed Paw wince when Puppy mentioned the shelter. “Is something wrong?”

“No,” Paw replied. Puppy looked at him expectantly, unconvinced.

“Okay, yes. Something is wrong. The shelter is a terrible place. And by terrible, I mean…” Paw paused, trying to come up with the right word, “Dreadful. The shelter is a dreadful, dreadful place. It’s worse than living here.” He gestured toward the kitchen, where he heard the faint sound of paper ripping.

“I’ll tell you later.First, follow me. We need to get to Fernickle’s bedroom before she finishes bandaging her foot.”

Puppy had dozens of questions in her head. Why did they need Fernickle’s phone? How would that help them stop her from sending Paw back to the shelter? What’s a bandage?

“Here it is. Be quiet. I’m usually not allowed in here,” Paw said, pushing the slightly-opened door further so they could fit. Puppy trotted in.

“What is that stench?” She asked, scrunching up her muzzle as far as it would go. Paw sighed.

“It’s Fernickle’s perfume, and yes, it does smell terrible. You get used to it. Where is her phone?” As Paw searched under the bed and on the dressing table, he noticed Puppy’s ears perk up.

“What is it? Do you hear something?” He asked her, afraid of what her answer would be.

“Fernickle! She’s coming!” Puppy warned. “Hurry!”
